Leroy’s pursuit in his art is to create “art that makes you smile”.
At the age of ten, Leroy discovered his love of painting that began with private summer art lessons. This would become his steady focus through the college years.
The primary pursuit was realism while experimenting with several mediums; oil, watercolor, acrylic, gouache, and pen and ink. After about twelve years Leroy needed a break from painting, and decided to put the brush down for a few months, which turned into four years.
Upon his return to the palette the goal was to have fun with color, composition, and line. Leroy wanted to create work that was uplifting and enjoyable to view. He had no idea how to achieve these goals. Thus far the approach had always been with a specific result in mind. Determined to challenge this concept, he started drawing with his eyes closed while meditating. This was an exercise to free him from any pre-conceived ideas. These figures and style were born out of these meditation exercises.
Leroy no longer draws with his eyes closed, and the result is a continued development of this style.
Leroy’s latest pursuits are projects created with the computer. Last Christmas lead to the creation of paper and e-greeting cards. My favorite SayIt card is the Flower Dance.
Leroy’s primary pursuit is painting. He exhibits often in SanFrancisco.
He also has written a few children’s books that are yet to be published.
Leroy’s favorite book is taken from his childhood. It is about a young boy who is trying to decide what he would like to become when he is an adult. He visualizes himself in different professions As he is visualizing a Cane Syrup delivery truck passes. He then realizes he would like to drive this truck so he can smell the syrup all day long.
Another project is Leroy’s joint venture with partner Jeffrey Laughlin. Which is the creation of a personal web site featuring his work. The latest additions to the site are coloring books, puzzles, calendars, and mouse pads featuring his work.
At first glance one may think his work is for children, but the reality is adults purchase the work for their homes and workspaces. It is quite gratifying to enjoy creating fun and creative work that is enjoyed by people of all ages.
